As the Kennett Food Cupboard continues to bring awareness to those in need around the community, they are now planning for the upcoming third annual Empty Bowls Dinner Feb. 20.

“It’s based on the idea that it’s a very simple meal of a bowl of soup, a piece of bread and a small, side salad,” said Melanie Weiler, executive director of the cupboard. “The idea is that you’re not totally full when you leave. It brings out the point that there are people going to bed hungry every night in our community.”

Each person who attends the dinner will receive a handmade clay bowl for the soup and they will be able to keep the bowl.

Different groups in the area have been hard at work creating the bowls, including Kendal-Crosslands, some Girl Scout troops and Tick Tock, to name a few.

But a dinner won’t be the only thing going on that night.

“We do a silent auction and we’ll share some testimonials from some of our clients so people are aware of how our work is affecting people in the community,” Weiler said.

All money raised from the event will go directly to the food cupboard program.

“Any additional money raised goes to the operation of our agency of KACS [Kennett Area Community Service],” Weiler said.

Attending a dinner where you leave without usually feeling completely full can sound like a detractor, but the generosity of the community has led to the event being sold out the last two years and they are expecting 400 people to come out this year.

“People come out and support it because they’re supporting the food cupboard and they’re supporting feeding people in the community,” Weiler said. “It’s to fight hunger in the community. I went last year and I actually was full.”

The Empty Bowls Dinner will be held at the Red Clay Room in Kennett Square from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 20.

Tickets for the event are $25 and can still be purchased by contacting anyone on the committee, by stopping by the food cupboard, or on the KACS website (

Sponsorships are also still open and start at $100 and can be purchased on the same page as the tickets or contact Weiler at 610-925-3556.
