KINZERS – For a team that has gone 2-28 over the last three seasons, the Fleetwood Tigers got off on the right foot Saturday as they defeated the Octorara Braves, 24-8.

Senior Stephen Hilborn debuted as the quarterback for the Tigers after he made the switch from wide receiver over the summer at the request of new head coach James Martinez.

“Looking at him as a leader (and his) athletic ability, we’re not just going to throw the ball, he’s going to run it as well,” Martinez said. “What we’re supposed to accomplish as far as formations and adjustments, he understands those things.”

Hilborn went 3-for-9 for 53 yards and one interception on the day, but the main focus of Fleetwood’s offense was on the run.

The team compiled 258 rushing yards, with the bulk coming from sophomore Tyler Emge (133 yards) and senior Jabari Johnson (102 yards).

“We’ve got to run the ball,” Martinez said. “Pound the rock, like some of those big-time coaches say. We’re going to keep working on it and hopefully we can keep improving on it and making little tweaks here and there.”

In Martinez’s first game as head coach, he got the team rolling in the opening half where they kept Octorara to no first downs and negative yardage.

“The first half felt great, the second half we need some work,” Martinez said. “We were not producing the way we should have in the second half. It was a new situation for him (Hilborn), so for us to come out and play the way we did in the second half was a little bit disappointing. Overall, we worked hard and did what we needed to win.”
