How many fans does it take to ruin a hockey game? In this case, it’s just one.

In the pre-season game between the Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings Thursday night in London, Ont., Wayne Simmonds, recently acquired over the summer by the Flyers, had a banana thrown at him from someone in the crowd during his shootout attempt.

“I don’t know if it had anything to do with the fact I’m black,” Simmonds told the Associated Press. “I certainly hope not. When you’re black, you kind of expect (racist) things. You learn to deal with it.”

Despite the incident, Simmonds was able to score the lone goal for the Flyers in the shootout.

Shortly after the incident, an outpouring of support for Simmonds came from fans and other players on Twitter:

Andrew Gordon of the Anaheim Ducks (@AndrewGordon10): “Wayne Simmons dealt with an act of extreme ignorance and stupidity tonight. Sad to here. No room for this. None.”

Anthony Stewart of the Carolina Hurricanes (@EhStew13): “Didn’t know London Ont was a stop on the Mario Cart Tour #disappointing”

Chris Stewart of the St. Louis Blues (@CstewSTL25): “The incident that happened in london tonight involving my best friend wayne simmonds was simply disgusting, its 2011 ppl need to grow up.”

Logan Couture of the San Jose Sharks (@Logancouture): “Wayne Simmonds is a good friend of mine. To hear what happened tonight to him in my hometown is awful. No need for this in sports, or life.”

According to Comcast-Spectacor president and COO Peter Luukko, the fan who committed the act was not identified.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman released a statement Friday morning on the incident: “We have millions of great fans who show tremendous respect for our players and for the game. The obviously stupid and ignorant action by one individual is in no way representative of our fans or the people of London, Ontario.”
