Your favorite American player

What better way to celebrate hockey in America than to have a poll for the fans!

On Twitter Sunday, I posed the question of “Who is your favorite American player currently in the NHL?” The votes began as many would have predicted, but then turned in the second half after a push from a surprising fan base.

Buffalo’s Ryan Miller took an early lead and held onto it for the majority of the afternoon, but Phoenix Coyotes fans rallied behind Keith Yandle and made a final push through the last hour and a half to give their player first place in votes with 21. Miller took second with 13 and Vancouver’s Ryan Kesler took third place with 8 votes.

Shockers

  • Amazing job by the Coyotes fans to spread the word. I would have thought Miller would run away with this one, but you all put an end to that.
  • New Jersey’s Zach Parise received only two votes. It seems as though it’s “out-of-sight-out-of-mind” with him since he has been rehabbing a knee injury the entire season.
  • I would have believed Philadelphia Flyers fans would vote more for James van Riemsdyk, but Brian Boucher received more.
  • Justin Abdelkader is making an impression on Detroit Red Wings fans since he was in second place for most of the day, even over fellow teammate Jimmy Howard. Brian Rafalski didn’t register a single vote.
  • Chicago’s Patrick Kane was barely a blip on the radar after helping Team USA to a silver in the Olympics last year and scoring the overtime Cup-winning goal in the Finals.

Final Results

Since the chart may be a little hard to read (though you can enlarge the picture by clicking on it), here are the final rankings for the players:

I would like to point out that, like Brett Hull, Mike Knuble is NOT an American player. He was born in Canada.

He’s a tricky guy. He was born in Toronto, but has always played for Team USA his entire career.

Hmmm….John LeClaire- sexiest eyes in hockey……Rather offended that Mike Richter was not included on the poll the NHL had on FB. Wow, has he been forgotten already?
