The Philadelphia Flyers currently lead the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference with 61 points and a 28-11-5 record. They are only 4 points out of first in the entire league. They have gone 6-3-0 since Christmas and own the best road record in the NHL at 15-5-3.

Maybe that’s why head coach Peter Laviolette decided to have a relaxing and fun day in New York City the day before the Flyers take on the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden Sunday night.

Instead of having practice Saturday inside the Garden, Laviolette decided to take them to the Park instead – Central Park, that is.

The Flyers hit the ice on a smaller rink than their normally used to and ditched the pads and had a grand ‘ole time playing in just sweats. Players were nothing but smiles as they skated around, reminiscing of not only the Winter Classic last year, but their childhoods as many of them grew up playing hockey out on frozen ponds or backyard rinks.

Fans in the area gathered around the rink, along with two all-girls middle school hockey teams. With the crowd so close to the action, many players took the time to visit with their spectators.

Some will remember last season when the Ottawa Senators practiced in the same rink and went on an 11-game win streak afterward. The Flyers can only hope the same will happen for them.
