Flyers Country: Rough week for the Phantoms

The Flyers’ injuries are beginning to pile up. General manager Paul Holmgren released the status of defenseman Matt Walker Tuesday afternoon. Walker had surgery on his hip Wednesday to repair a torn labrum and is scheduled to be out 10-12 weeks. According to Tim Panaccio of Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, Walker injured his hip in a fight during the preseason.

With the Greenville Road Warriors opening their season Thursday night, their final roster was set as such:

A late goal by Ryan Getzlaf cost the Flyers the chance at a guaranteed point with less than two minutes remaining in the third period to break a 2-2 tie Thursday night. Anaheim goaltender Curtis McElhinney was able to hold on with the extra attacker on for the Flyers to preserve a 3-2 win for the Ducks.

To try and get the offense out of its scoring slump, Peter Laviolette switched up two lines Saturday night. It worked as the Flyers went on to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-2. The two new lines: Powe-Richards-Giroux and van Riemsdyk-Carter-Zherdev. Also, Daniel Carcillo was back in on the fourth line over Andreas Nodl.

After facing their third straight game, the Phantoms finished the weekend, going 1-1-1. They fell to the Rochester Americans Sunday, 5-2. Brian Stewart started in net for the first time this season, facing 24 shots and making 20 saves.

The Phantoms start the second weekend full of games Friday night with a loss against the Charlotte Checkers, 5-1. Jon Matsumoto, who spent the last four seasons with the Phantoms, had a three points night with a goal and two assists. Eric Wellwood scored the only goal for Adirondack.

The Road Warriors opened their season at home against the Florida Everblades Thursday night with a 4-1 win. The Road Warriors broke open the game in the third period when Jaroslav Janus came in to replace starter Bobby Goepfert after he left with an upper body injury. The Road Warriors welcomed the rookie to the ECHL by lighting the lamp three times in the third to secure the win.

The Road Warriors faced the Everblades for the second straight day Friday night in a thrilling and high-scoring, overtime game. After a back and forth battle, the Everblades came away with the win, 7-6. Everblades’ forward Alexandre Imbeault registered a hat trick. Nine different Greenville players had at least one point in the game while six of them had two or more.

The Flyers face two back-to-back games next week. They begin away against the Columbus Blue Jackets Monday night before coming home to take on the Buffalo Sabres Tuesday. Then they return to Pittsburgh to play the Penguins for the third time this month Friday before once again returning home to face the New York Islanders Saturday for their Halloween game.

The Phantoms finish another weekend filled with games Sunday against the Hershey Bears before another four-day layoff before their two-game homestand against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Friday and Rochester Americans Saturday.

The Road Warriors take on the South Carolina Stingrays three times next week, all at home. The Stingrays come into the BI-LO to play Sunday, Friday and Saturday.
