Friday afternoon the Philadelphia Flyers received more information on goaltender Michael Leighton. It was originally announced that Leighton would miss one month with a bulging disk in his back, but new information has come out that it has now become herniated and will require surgery. Leighton will now be sidelined anywhere from six to eight weeks.

Leighton told Joe Siville of philadelphiaflyers.com that the injury started in the playoffs last year:

“I kind of dealt with it a little bit in the playoffs last year,” said Leighton. “It wasn’t bothering me when I was playing, it was just more of an off-ice thing, when I was stretching it was stiff. I did deal with it in the summer. I got some tests done and it wasn’t very severe in the summer. All through training camp it was still there, but it didn’t bother me on the ice so I just kind of worked through it. I was told to do exercises and work through it. Then in that Toronto game it kind of jumped to a new level and totally did different things. I’m obviously disappointed with the way it went.”

Flyers fans groan as they remember back to last season with the goalie-go-round which saw seven different goaltenders dress for the team. One bright spot to the situation is that it now gives rookie Sergei Bobrovsky more time on the big club to show what he can do.
