Flyers draft six starting in third round

The Philadelphia Flyers entered the 2010 NHL Entry Draft with only five selections, starting in the third round.  With a trade later in the afternoon, they were able to acquire one more pick in the seventh.  Here’s a breakdown of the players the Flyers drafted:

The Flyers drafted center Michael Chaput in the third round (89th overall) from the Lewiston Maineiacs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).  The 6-2, 188-pound Quebec native played in 29 games in the 2009-10 season and scored 3 goals and 7 assists for 10 points and was a -1 with 34 penalty minutes.  Chaput won 54.1-percent of the faceoffs he took.

The Flyers drafted left-winger Tye McGinn in the fourth round (119th overall) from the Gatineau Olympiques of the QMJHL.  The 6-2, 200-pound Ontario native played in 50 games in the 2009-10 season.  He led the Olympiques in goals (27), assists (35) and points (62).  He was a +15 with 50 penalty minutes and scored 10 power-play goals.

The Flyers drafted right-winger Michael Parks in the fifth round (149th overall) from the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the United States Hockey League (USHL).  The 5-10, 184-pound Missouri native played in 51 games in the 2009-10 season and scored 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points and was a +4 with 57 penalty minutes.

The Flyers drafted defenseman Nicholas Luukko, son of team president Peter Luukko, in the sixth round (179th overall) from The Gunnery High School in Connecticut.  The 6-2, 181-pound Pennsylvania native played in 34 games in the 2009-10 season and scored 2 goals and 21 assists for 23 points and had 20 penalty minutes.

The Flyers traded restricted free-agent Jon Matsumoto to the Carolina Hurricanes for their seventh-round pick (206th overall) and used it to draft defenseman Ricard Blidstrand from the Allmänna Idrottsklubben Jrs. (AIK) in Sweden.  The 6-2, 201-pound Swedish native played in 33 games in the 2009-10 season and scored 2 goals and 6 assists for 8 points and had 4 penalty minutes.

The Flyers drafted left-winder Brendan Ranford in the seventh round (209th overall) from the Kamloops Blazers from the Western Hockey League (WHL).  The 5-10, 182-pound Alberta native played in 72 games in the 2009-10 season.  He was second on the Blazers in goals (29), assists (36) and points (65).  He was a +2 with 83 penalty minutes and scored 10 power-play goals and 2 shorthanded goals.
